          How we got these numbers

Every number on this page comes from a public record. Tap a heading to see which records, how they were read, and what they leave out.

          How the checks were read
          • The city's check lists (it calls them warrant registers) are scanned pages inside the City Council agenda packets. Every amount and every check date was read at least twice, by separate text reading programs. Where the readings did not agree, the value was settled by a third reading, by the totals the city printed on each list, or by looking at the page by eye.
          • Every check list matches the city's printed totals to the cent. On 2 of the lists used here, the city's own summary page does not match its check list (by $369.39 each). We follow the check lists.
          • Checks that were voided, or replaced by a new check, are counted once.
          • Names are shown exactly as the city printed them. A star (*) means the name runs to the edge of the name column on the city's list, so the city may have cut it off. We did not fill in the rest of any name, and nothing was looked up elsewhere. Only our own reading errors were fixed, each checked against the page.
          • Two spellings of a name are combined only when the city's vendor number is the same. Where one vendor number was printed under two names, like a business that changed its name, both names are shown, newest first.
          • Scans can still be misread. Before quoting a single payment, check it against the original list in the council agenda.
          What these numbers leave out
          • Every question covers July 2025 to June 2026, except question 4, which looks at five years to show the trend.
          • The payments are the checks dated July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026. That is not every dollar the city spends, and city payroll itself is not on these lists. Pay is covered in question 2, from the city budget.
          • Budget numbers for July 2025 to June 2026 are the city's own estimates for the year, printed in the 2026-27 adopted budget. Outside auditors have not checked them yet. In question 4, July 2026 to June 2027 is the plan the council adopted, not final spending.
          Privacy
          • No private person is named. Payments to people (retirees, employees, commissioners, residents getting refunds) are grouped by type, and no payment descriptions are shown.
          • Where the city's list prints a business owner's personal name, or an account or tax ID number, next to a business name, that part is left out.
